AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVE OF PETRA
The Agricultural Cooperative of Petra was formed in 1927 by farming communities in the districts of Petra and
Lafiona.
Today it has 114 members and its main activities are the operation of the olive oil factory, the collection of its members' sheep and goat milk, the trading of animal fodder and a commercial outlet for traditional products of the island of Lesvos.
The governing body is the General Assembly which meets at least once a year.
The cooperative is administered by a five-member council elected every 3 years by members.
The establishments of the cooperative are to be found on private ground outside the village of Petra and are comprised of 2 traditional stone buildings which house the olive oil factory and its storeroom. Directly in front more recent buildings house the cooperative's offices and the commercial outlet for the traditional products of Lesvos. Today, apart from virgin olive oil and olives of Lesvos, you can also obtain soap made from olive oil, cheeses such as Kasseri, Feta, Mijithra, Graviera and Lathotiri - a special hard cheese usually made from sheep milk and preserved in olive oil (hence the name oil cheese). Also available is ouzo from Petra, salted sardines from the region of Kaloni, assorted handmade pasta, bottled sweet preserves of various fruit and vegetables, handmade pottery and other miscellaneous products.
